Boost Your Followers by 279% with BottomSheet

October 4, 2023 | Tech Stories

Hello. I’m a service planner in charge of the Home and Subscriptions sectionsWadiz.

We’ve added a feature Wadizthat makes it easier for supporters to follow makers they’re interested in. Thanks to this single small update, key metrics have surged past their previous highs, with a 279% increase compared to the previous day. How did a single BottomSheet connect so many supporters and makers? Let me share the behind-the-scenes story and the rationale behind this project—details we couldn’t include in the proposal.

Do I really need to follow them?

Makers and Supporters

Wadizhas two types of users: makers and supporters. Makers are the ones who launch projects Wadiz, while supporters are the ones who participate in makers' projects

To expand theWadiz ecosystem, it was necessary for makers to consistently launch projects Wadizand for supporters to repeatedly seek out those projects. We needed a process thatwent beyond simply bookmarking a project they liked—we needed to create akind of “maker fan” basethat would draw attention to the makers themselves. What was most needed at this point was a bridge between supporters and makers.

The first step in building a fan base: "Follow"

Using BottomSheets to Guide Users to Follow Creators: The Purpose of This User Flow

"Guidance" refers to the act of "leading" a person or object in a desired direction. In other words, it must not involve coercion. To create a "Fan," the most important thing was to guide users in a direction that allowed them to naturally "follow" the transition path.

Think from the user’s perspective: When would I most want to follow someone?

During the planning phase, I took a close look at the entire Wadiz ecosystem, asking myself, “If I were a user, when would I want to follow?”

Hypothesis for creating a user flow to encourage creators to follow using BottomSheet

We were able to map out a customer journey that connects users who perform "actions" such as subscribing to notifications, visiting the site, adding items to their wishlist, or making a purchase to "Follow the Maker," thereby securing loyal customers.

  • If a user has subscribed to notifications or added the account to their favorites but hasn’t followed it, the system prompts them with “Would you like to follow the creator as well?”
  • If they’re already following you, you can suggest, “How about checking out other projects?” to encourage them to explore new projects by the same creator.

User Nudge: A Quick Look at BottomSheet

The target audience can be broadly divided into two categories.

  • If you have subscribed to notifications or added the item to your wishlist but have not followed the creator
  • If you've already followed them and they happen to have an ongoing project (which is actually great)

For users in such different situations, we tried to offer subtle hints to help them navigate according to their specific needs.

  • If you've subscribed to notifications or added the creator to your favorites but haven't followed them yet > You can start by following the creator
  • If you have already followed a creator and they happen to have another ongoing project > so that you can explore the creator’s other projects

One Extra Step: Don’t Stop at Following—Try a Nudge to Get Them to “Agree to Receive Notifications”

Previously, we displayed the options to follow the creator and agree to receive notifications in a single modal. If a supporter clicked "Confirm," they would only follow the creator; if they selected "Receive updates from the creator" and clicked "Confirm," they would also receive notifications about the creator's new updates.

User Flow for Encouraging Followers Using BottomSheet_Previous Version

We made following the creator our top priority and added another step for users to consent to receiving updates. Instead, we explained the benefits supporters would receive upon giving their consent.

By splitting the process of following a creator and agreeing to receive notifications—which had previously been presented in a single modal—into two BottomSheets, we saw a staggering 97% increase in the notification consent rate. Adding an extra step actually turned out to be a valuable opportunity to better highlight the service and emphasize the importance of receiving notifications.

Most importantly, don’t interfere with navigation

We classified users who clicked the dimmed area, the back button, or the close button on the first BottomSheet that appeared as passive users. To avoid further disrupting their navigation, we deployed a logic that prevents the same BottomSheet from appearing again within 24 hours.

Monitoring Metrics After Deployment

Once a product manager deploys a feature, there’s only one thing they obsess over: relentlessly tracking the metrics for the areas where they set up events. They check the metrics 30 minutes after deployment, then again an hour later, two hours later, in the evening, and even in the early hours of the morning before heading home. The moment they refresh the dashboard is the most nerve-wracking moment for a product manager. That’s because it’s the moment they directly experience user reactions in numerical form.

We achieved metrics that exceededour pre-launch goals by over 200%. This result doesn’t just mean an increase in the number of maker followers. Moving beyond simply bookmarking a project to actually following the project’s creator, subscription model. By encouraging supporters to follow makers during their exploration process, we expect thatWadizwill gain more fans of its makers—and, by extension, more fansWadiz. As a service planner, I will also persistently explore and deliberate to provide an even better user experience.

Stay tuned to see what kind of impact Maker Follow will have Wadiz!
